The most successful model is subscription. The most persistent success story I know is Talking Points Memo. Not all things to all people, but unbeatable in its areas of concentration. Josh Marshall saw the lay of the land years ago, and acted accordingly. You are starting to see a migration to Substack of lots of reporters and commentators, which is essentially following that model. So, this is not a problem without a solution.
There are extremists everywhere. Ever read the letters to the editor in any major paper? At least here, I have control over who I can block, or even just pay attention to.

And that all depends on the good graces of Substack, which has also been criticized as a home for extremists.
