On this day in Irish Political History, Sean Gallaghers' Presidential Campaign Ended
A fake tweet helped end it.
It’s often forgotten that Seán Gallagher almost became President of Ireland in 2011. The election was a two-horse race and Gallagher was leading Micheal D Higgins in the polls between 10% and 18% depending on who was doing the polling. Everyone suspected the Uncle Fester lookalike was a secret Fianna Fáiler but people didn’t seem to care too much. Until…..
Martin McGuiness had a lacklustre campaign and was dogged by allegations of being a murdering bastard. In one final act that an IRA sniper would be proud of, McGuiness took aim at Gallagher’s Presidential ambitions with his sniper-like allegations of Gallagher being a secret Fianna Fáil fundraiser. This was a time when Oliver Cromwell was polling higher than Fianna Fáil in the popularity stakes.
The final death blow came from Pat Kenny who read out a tweet from a fake Martin McGuinness for President Twitter account. Pat Kenny told Gallagher “Sinn Féin are going to produce the man who gave you the cheque for five grand.”
