It may come as a surprise to those who closely follow Irish politics that there are established rules dictating proper conduct during debates in the Dáil or Seanad chambers. The rulebook was last updated in 2011, and can be found here for reference.
First and foremost, name-calling is strictly forbidden. There exists an official list of prohibited words, including brat, buffoon, chancer, communist, corner boy, coward, fascist, gurrier, guttersnipe, hypocrite, rat, scumbag, scurrilous, and yahoo. Curiously, while the use of "handbagging" when addressing a female deputy is explicitly discouraged, there is no mention of "tea-bagging." Similarly, the rulebook remains silent on terms such as gobshite, shitehawk, halfwit, pox-bottle, gombeen, thicko, bollox, geebag, and even "organic farmer."
