When you think of banks in Ireland what do you think of? It’s mostly scandals—bailouts, bogus non-resident accounts, lying to revenue commissioners, defrauding the state, overcharging customers and just being the caricature of bad guys everyone suspects they are. No financial institution within the state has been so involved in as many financial scandals and crimes as Allied Irish Banks. Don’t mistake their polished veneers for competence. These institutions preach the gospel of free markets but regularly have to be bailed out by the taxpayer and never fear the legal consequences of their actions. Behind closed doors, they bemoan new regulations designed to keep their avarice in check, as if rules were an affront to their divine right to exploit and profit until they’re found to be massively incompetent again and need another bailout from you and me. But at least they’re not Revolut.
