Michael D Higgins Love Letter to Iran Is A New Low For The Irish Presidency
A new low for an already damaged Presidency.
Michael D. Higgins has once again sparked fury with a letter addressed to the newly appointed president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, wishing him well in Iran’s role in the “struggle for peace”.
Today’s Iranian regime, a theocracy thinly veiled in a tapestry of Persian history and cultural grandeur, crisscrossing a fine line between governance and tyranny. Recent crackdowns on protestors have become a grim carnival of power. A macabre display, where the currency of human suffering is meted out in spades by baton-wielding sentinels of the state. The newly elected Iranian President condemned the protests and said he did not consider the protests to be in the people's interest. The world watched in horror when the 2019 and 2022 Iranian protests erupted into a bloody maelstrom, with hundreds of lives expunged, each drop of blood a stark reminder that freedom here is not just elusive in Iran—it is criminalised and you will be executed by a vengeful state.
